Roundabout rules: A refresher for all drivers

Love 'em or hate 'em, there's plenty across Colorado, so it's important to know how they work.

DALLAS — Roundabouts can be a headache for drivers - whether its navigating them, or watching others do it.

The Federal Highway Administration says roundabouts help provide a more efficient flow of traffic and significantly reduce serious and fatal crashes than your standard intersection, so you should know exactly how to navigate them!

Let's get into some tips from the City of Dallas.

The roundabout sign is going to let you know there's one coming up, which is important because you want to make sure you're in the lane you need to be. If you're not, knowing it's coming up can give you some time to get there.

Signs above the road and white arrows on the road should show you the correct lane to use.

And as you approach the circle, slow down. You want to keep an eye out for pedestrians, bikers, and any car already moving through the roundabout.

All traffic is a one-way, and you're going to yield to the traffic coming from your left. They all have the right-of-way.

Notice we said yield, and not stop? That's exactly what should happen.

Of course, if you have to pause and wait for traffic, that's one thing. But you shouldn't stop your vehicle as you approach the roundabout unless absolutely necessary.

That's key in making sure traffic flows smoothly.

Once you see a safe opportunity to enter the circle, make sure to stay in your lane, and follow the markings to get to the exit you need.
