DEER TRAIL, Colo. — A 20-mile stretch of road east of the Denver metro area is about to get a long-awaited refresh.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) said 20 miles of Interstate 70 between Bennett and Deer Trail will be given new pavement.

CDOT said the current pavement, originally built in 1991, has required multiple repairs and is now deteriorating to the point that permanent repairs need to be made for the safety of travelers.

The construction project begins Monday and is scheduled to be completed in May.

During the project, CDOT will replace concrete panels, requiring single-lane closures along I-70.

Beginning Monday, single-lane closures on I-70 will take place in one-mile increments from 7 a.m. Monday to noon Friday each week until the project is done. There will be no lane closures during the weekends, holidays or adverse weather conditions, CDOT said.

The project will begin on westbound I-70 near Deer Trail. After panels are replaced on the westbound side from Deer Trail to Bennett, then crews will shift to the eastbound side, with a single-lane closure beginning at Bennett.

CDOT said motorists should be prepared for possible delays during the morning and evening peak travel periods. The speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph in the work zone.
