Flooding issues hit afternoon commuters in metro area

Hail storms and flooding have been reported across the metro area, including Interstate 25, Interstate 70 and roads leading into suburbs near the downtown area.

DENVER — As forecasted severe weather blew through the Denver metro area, reports of flooded interstates, off-ramps, and underpasses caused a major slowdown for some afternoon commuters.

Pictures and videos show a car stranded in the high water on eastbound Interstate 70 under Federal Avenue and took traffic down to one lane.

A Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) camera captured a vehicle on I-25 stalling out in high waters. Vehicles had to move around it until the driver received assistance to move it.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Tornado Watch through 9 p.m. for the northern Front Range and eastern plains including the Denver metro area, Boulder, Fort Collins, Greeley, Fort Morgan, and Sterling. The Watch also includes parts of Wyoming and Nebraska.

Denver Fire was called out to the area of West 38th Avenue and Fox Street after reports of a car submerged in the water flooding the underpass.

Dive crews were able to determine there were no people trapped in the car and all of the divers are out of the water and safe. DFD reminded drivers not to drive through standing water.

Parts of the metro area are under Severe Thunderstorm and Flash Flood Warnings.
