DENVER — East Denver is upgrading its stormwater system along East 14th Avenue from Jackson to Colorado Boulevard.
Nancy Kuhn with Denver Transportation and Infrastructure said the current stormwater infrastructure dates to the 1930s and doesn’t meet the drainage needs. The project will help mitigate flooding issues that residents and businesses see during any storm event.
“This is an area where we do have known flooding locations where in larger storm events water collects and it creates hazardous situations for our residents,” Kuhn said. “We’re building these systems to better manage that stormwater.”
The improvement project started on Monday at East 14th Avenue and Jackson Street, along this area, larger stormwater pipes will be installed underneath to Colorado Boulevard.
“You know when we do these big investments in our stormwater system, it’s wonderful from a stormwater system perspective but it can be impactful to the travel and public, because we’re basically digging a huge hole under the street, and you know people can’t drive there,” Kuhn said.
Travel patterns will be seen as people make their way through Josephine Street and East 14th Avenue. People who work, live, or need to go to National Jewish Health are asked to take 14th Avenue, others are being detoured up to 17th near East High School and City Park.
“We have a full closure of East 14th Ave, from Jackson Street to Colorado, so what we’re trying to do is reduce the number of vehicles approaching that area because it fully closes when you approach Colorado,” Kuhn said.
This phase of the project is expected to run through January 2025 and the traffic changes on 14th avenue will be in place until April 2024.
