Pedestrian killed in crash near South Platte River

The crash happened Wednesday near 29th Street and Arkins Court.

DENVER — A man is dead after he was pulled under the wheels of a tractor-trailer on Wednesday in the River North Art District, Denver Police said.

About 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the Denver Police Department were called out to the 2900 block of Arkins Court, along the South Platte River near 29th Street, for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.

The pedestrian involved in the crash died at the scene, according to police.

The preliminary investigation shows the driver of the tractor-trailer was on Arkins Court when the pedestrian fell into the roadway as the truck was passing. The man was struck by the truck's right rear tires, police said.

"When he stood up, it's like he couldn't keep his legs under him, and he started to drift back," said Ray Folks, who witnessed the crash. "When he hit the ground, it was the rear tandem that caught him."

The truck driver left the scene but was located and then returned to the scene. The driver said they didn't know a pedestrian had fallen into the roadway and was hit, police said. Folks said he and other witnesses tried to alert the driver.

"There were six people yelling at him. He didn’t hear any of them. I don't think he knew what happened."

The driver was released and hasn't been cited at this time.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
