2 killed, 2 injured in crash near Elizabeth

Both speed and alcohol are considered factors in the crash, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. — Two people died and two were injured in a crash Friday morning in Elbert County, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP)

The crash happened just before 9 a.m. near Colorado Highway 86 and County Road 21, according to a CSP spokesman. That is about 1.5 miles west of the town of Elizabeth.

A 2015 black Hyundai and a 2013 blue Ford Mustang were involved in the crash, according to CSP. Sky9 footage from the scene showed extensive damage to both vehicles and debris strewn on the roadway.

The drivers of both vehicles died at the scene, and two adult passengers in the Hyundai suffered serious injuries, according to CSP.

CSP said the Hyundai was heading west on Highway 86 when the right wheels went off the road and when the driver, a 33-year-old Denver man, tried to correct the vehicle, it ended up going into oncoming traffic and crashing head-on with the Mustang.

The driver of the Mustang was a 26-year-old man from Elizabeth, according to CSP.

CSP said speed and alcohol on the part of the Hyundai driver are considered factors in the crash.
