CDOT warns of challenging Monday morning commute after overnight snow

CDOT said weather conditions will make driving very challenging. Rain changed to snow late Sunday creating slick, icy roads across Colorado.

DENVER — Overnight snow will make for a challenging Monday morning commute in the Denver area and much of the state, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) warned Sunday.

CDOT urged travelers to be prepared for heavy localized snow and strong gusty winds after winter storm warnings and advisories were issued for much of Colorado.

Crews are working around the clock and will keep roads as clear and safe as possible throughout the storm, CDOT said, but heavy snowfall and blowing snow will make travel hazardous through the night and into the morning.

Areas are of particular concern:

I-70 mountain corridor

Increased snowfall is creating difficult winter driving conditions, CDOT said. Drivers should expect slow-going traffic and delays. Commercial vehicle drivers are urged to follow chain and traction laws.

I-25 Palmer Divide

With blizzard conditions along the Palmer Divide and eastward into the plains, driving conditions are treacherous with strong winds and low visibility. Travel should be avoided.

Eastern Plains

While snow accumulations may be minimal on the plans, CDOT said strong winds are creating low to zero visibility and ground blizzard effects. Eastbound commercial and passenger vehicle travel along I-70 and I-76 out of Denver is strongly discouraged.

Mountains

Mountain ranges across the state will continue to receive snow overnight, CDOT said. High mountain passes will become snowpacked, slick and icy.

Metro Denver

Overnight snow will make the Monday morning commute very challenging, CDOT said. Drivers should give themselves extra time or consider a delayed start if possible.

Drivers can keep track of road conditions at cotrip.org.
