DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Dish Network is racing to overcome technical challenges and launch an over-the-top Internet video service by year's end so the company can tap a new, growing audience.

The Douglas County-based satellite TV company aims to be among the first media companies selling an online video product and, it hopes, tapping some growth that has been stagnant in the traditional subscription TV market.

"That will enable us to go after people who aren't paying for TV today," said Charlie Ergen, Dish Network co-founder and chairman, estimating the potential OTT audience initially being between 4 million and 5 million people. "And that's likely to grow."

Dish foresees an 18- to 35-year-old, mostly male and urban audience willing to pay about $30 a month for a package of TV programs and sports from Disney and other companies.

"We're not going after the guy that pays $100 a month, has a house and four TVs," Ergen said.
