Lalas Abubakar joins Colorado Rapids on one-year loan

The 24-year-old has made 31 appearances with Columbus Crew SC.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Columbus Crew SC defender Lalas Abubakar is joining the Colorado Rapids on a one-year loan, the Rapids announced Wednesday. 

Abubakar, 24, is being acquired in exchange for $125,000 in 2019 Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). 

“We are pleased to bring in a young and athletic defender in Lalas,” said Pádraig Smith, Rapids Executive Vice President & General Manager. “He is a quick and physical centerback with good experience in the league."

Abubakar was selected by Columbus with the fifth overall pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. The defender made 31 appearances and scored two goals with the Crew in two seasons and has international experience with the Ghana U-20 National Team.

The Rapids are back in action Saturday night when they host Rocky Mountain Cup rival Real Salt Lake at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
