In the race to win skiers’ and snowboarders’ loyalty and money, Broomfield-based Vail Resorts Inc. (NYSE: MTN) and Denver-based Alterra Mountain Co. have worked all during the offseason to add mountains, pass perks and improve resorts.

Vail Resorts, which sells the popular Epic Pass, acquired the operator of 17 American ski areas, Peak Resorts Inc. (Nasdaq: SKIS), in a $264 million deal announced in July. The deal was completed in September.

New to the Epic Pass this year is access to a number of new locations including Telluride Ski Resort and the Peak Resorts ski areas, which are mostly located near major Midwest and East Coast metropolitan areas.

The Epic Pass is currently selling for $989, the Epic Local Pass for $739 and the company's new Epic Day Pass starts at $112 for one day.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area joined up with Alterra's Ikon Pass along with Zermatt Matterhorn in Switzerland and Mt. Buller in Australia. Alterra added new lifts at Colorado's Winter Park Resort and California's Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and is in the process of installing a new gondola with WiFi at Steamboat Resort.
