ESTES PARK, Colo. — A popular Colorado campground will be closed longer than expected due to construction delays.

Rocky Mountain National Park said in a release that the Moraine Park Campground is expected to remain closed this summer and fall because of the East Utility Rehabilitation Project.

It was originally slated to reopen in early summer of this year after a closure that began in May 2023.

"Production in the field did not match the anticipated schedule," the release said. "The contractor is working to finish up the project while the weather is good by expediting the delivery of construction materials and increasing crew sizes and/or work hours."

The release said much of the work for the project includes underground utility improvements that will allow for year-round use of the campground, increase the campground's accessibility and move sites off of sensitive wetlands while creating new sites.

The release said the project is improving the water, wastewater, and electrical distribution systems that serve Moraine Park Campground and many additional facilities on the east side of the park.
