SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, Colo. — A man has died after falling while climbing a 14er in southwest Colorado Wednesday.
The San Miguel County Sheriff's Office said search and rescue crews responded Wednesday morning to a report of an injured hiker on Wilson Peak, southwest of Telluride.
The sheriff's office said the 53-year-old man from Rochester, New York, who was an experienced climber, was hiking alone on the Rock of Ages trail when he fell about 300 to 400 feet and suffered a head injury.
When rescuers reached the man, they found that he had died. The sheriff's office said the four-hour recovery mission was conducted with help from Durango-based Highland Helicopter.
Wilson Peak's summit is 14,021 feet above sea level. Its difficulty is rated a Class 3 out of 5 on 14ers.com.
