How Team USA shooting athletes use new tech to improve their target scores

USA Shooting coaches are spending more time looking at an athlete's feet to improve their target scores.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — At the USA Shooting range at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, air rifle coach Pete Durben is looking at how athletes are standing to improve their target scores on the range.

"He’s swaying forward when the shot goes off," said Durben. "I’m thinking that’s not the greatest thing."

The shooting team has been using a force platform that when an athletes is standing on it, can sense the amount of weight a person is putting on specific areas of their feet.

"It will show you the forces on your feet," said Durben. "What we're looking for mainly is balance how stable our balance is."

In training, athletes will stand for hours in the same spot. The force platform will show where an athlete is standing more heavily on their foot, which can help reduce the wear and tear on a foot allowing an athlete to focus more on their targets.

"In a competition if all your focusing on is the pain that’s not good," said Durben. "Now you’re focusing on the performance."
