PARIS, France — Women's gymnastics qualifications start on Sunday with a former DU athlete competing in artistic gymnastics, while a Denver Nuggets star takes the court against Team USA.
Here are the athletes with Colorado ties to watch on Sunday at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Artistic gymnastics
Former University of Denver gymnast Lynnzee Brown is representing Haiti. She’s the first gymnast, male or female, to represent Haiti at an Olympic Games and was also selected as that country’s flag bearer in the opening ceremony. She’s a native of Raytown, Missouri, and graduated from DU with a bachelor’s in media studies in 2021 and a master’s in communication management in 2023.

Basketball
In men’s basketball, Team USA plays Serbia in the first game of the Olympics for both teams. Derrick White, from Parker, plays on the U.S. team, and Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic plays for his native Serbia.
This is Jokic’s second Olympics. In the 2016 Rio Games, he lead Serbia to a silver medal, coming in second to Team USA.
White played three seasons at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and one season at the University of Colorado. He now plays for the Boston Celtics. This is his first Olympics.

Cycling
Savilia Blunk, who lives in Durango, has won multiple national titles and several Elite World Cup podiums in mountain biking. She’s originally from Inverness, Calif., and attended Fort Lewis College. According to USA Cycling, she’s passionate about inspiring others to embrace cycling as a lifelong sport. This is her first Olympics.

Rowing
Jessica Thoennes, from Highlands Ranch, was a walk-on to the University of Washington rowing team. She won in pairs rowing at the 2024 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Team Trials with partner Azja Czajkowski. This is her second games, after her women’s eight boat finished two seconds behind the bronze medalists at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Rugby
Colorado Gray Wolves player Sammy Sullivan, who lives in Glendale, is on the roster for the U.S. women’s rugby team. The team has two games in pool play on Sunday, against Japan and Brazil. She started playing rugby at West Point and holds the rank of Army captain. She’s originally from Fayetteville, N.C.

Shooting
Rylan Kissell was introduced to shooting with a BB gun and cans in his backyard. He started shooting competitively at age 12, and he moved to the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in 2023. He grew up in the Denver metro area and attended Dakota Ridge High School. This is his first Olympics.

Soccer
Coming off their win over Zambia, the U.S. women’s soccer team plays Germany on Sunday in group play. Three Colorado players are on the team: captain Lindsey Horan, of Golden; Mallory Swanson, of Highlands Ranch, and Sophia Smith, of Windsor. In the team’s first game of these Olympics, Swanson scored two goals and Horan had two assists.
Another Colorado native, Janine Beckie, plays for Canada due to her dual citizenship. She’s from Highlands Ranch and attended Valor Christian High School before going to play for Texas Tech. This is her third Olympics: She led Canada’s soccer team to a bronze in 2016 and a gold in 2020.

Swimming
Emma Weber, of Denver, will compete in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Paris Olympics. In high school, she was the Colorado state champion in 100-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter individual medley. She swam at Regis Jesuit and was part of the Denver Hilltoppers club team. In March, Weber helped lead the University of Virginia to win the NCAA National Championship. This is her first Olympics.
