Colorado athletes to watch at the Olympics on Monday

The U.S. women's indoor volleyball team opens pool play against China, and two men's mountain biking athletes compete for a medal.

PARIS, France — The U.S. women’s volleyball team begins their pursuit of a repeat gold medal with pool play against China, while two Colorado cyclists compete for a medal in mountain biking.

Here are the Colorado athletes to watch at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris on Monday.

Boxing

Jajaira Gonzales is a native of Glendora, California, and lives in Colorado Springs. She won her first match against Estelle Mossely (France) in the Round of 32 on Saturday, meaning she will move onto the Round of 16.

The 60 kg. boxer won gold at the Junior World Championships in 2013 and the World Youth Championships in 2014 and 2015. After stepping away for her mental health, she returned to the sport at the 2021 Elite National Championships and took gold. She also had a top four finish at the 2023 Pan American Games.

Cycling

Both of the U.S. athletes competing in the men’s mountain biking competition, Riley Amos and Christopher Blevins, are from Colorado.

Amos, of Durango, started biking in second grade. He’s competed at the World Cup four times and been on the podium each time. This is his first Olympics.

Blevens, also from Durango, grew up doing mountain biking and BMX. He started focusing on just mountain biking in 2019 to prepare for the Olympics. This is his second Olympics. He came in 14th in cross country in Tokyo.

Rugby

The U.S. women’s rugby team has their third game of pool play against France after defeating Japan (36-7) and Brazil (24-5) on Sunday. If Team USA moves onto the quarterfinals, those games will be played starting at 1 p.m. Monday.

Colorado Gray Wolves player Sammy Sullivan, who lives in Glendale, is on the roster for the U.S. team. She started playing rugby at West Point and holds the rank of Army captain. She’s originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Tennis

Rajeev Ram, originally from Denver, is a former world No. 1 and is competing in doubles with another former No. 1, Austin Krajicek. He’s a three-time Olympian and won silver at the 2016 Rio Games in mixed doubles . His current hometown of Carmel, Indiana, named a street temporarily in his honor.

Volleyball

The U.S. women’s volleyball team won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Games and on Monday will embark on another chance to stand atop the podium. Two players with Colorado ties are on the roster: Haleigh Washington and Jordyn Poulter.

Washington, of Colorado Springs, led Doherty High School to the state title in 2012 and Penn State to the NCAA Division I title in 2014. She started her professional career in Italy in 2018 and is now on the U.S. Women’s National Team. This is her second Olympics. She was named the best middle blocker in Tokyo.

Poulter went to Eaglecrest High School in Aurora. She has competed in every major tournament for the United States. This is her second Olympics, and she was named best setter at the Tokyo Olympics. In her free time, she is an aspiring filmmaker and plays the piano and guitar.
