Colorado athletes to watch Sunday at the Olympics

Bronze medalist Chloe Dygert has another chance at gold in the women's cycling road race.

PARIS, France — Cyclist Chloe Dygert will get another shot at gold in the women's road race, and Colorado track and field athletes compete in the men's 1,500 meter semifinals and the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Here are the Colorado athletes to cheer on Sunday at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

3x3 basketball

The U.S. men’s 3x3 basketball team plays their seventh game in the pool round against Netherlands. They won their fifth and sixth games Friday against China (21-17) and France (21-19).

Canyon Barry is from Colorado Springs and went to Cheyenne Mountain High School. Both of his parents, Lynn Norenberg Barry and Rick Barry, played basketball for Team USA. Canyon’s 3x3 team won first place at the 2023 Pan American Games.

Jimmer Fredette is from Glenn Falls, New York, and now lives in Littleton. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and played for seven seasons in the NBA. He was part of the first US Olympic Men’s 3x3 team.

Cycling

A Colorado cyclist will compete in the women’s road race on Sunday morning.

Chloe Dygert, who lives in Colorado Springs, won a bronze medal in the individual time trial event earlier in these Games. She’s a two-time Olympic medalist in 4km team pursuit: she won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Games and silver at the 2106 Rio Games. She’s also on Team USA’s track cycling team.

Golf

Wyndham Clark, of Denver, was sitting at 23rd after the third round on Saturday.

He started playing golf at age 3 when his mother took him to a driving range. He won the Colorado State Golf Championship twice while in high school, then went on to win the Pac-12 Conference Championship in 2016 while at the University of Oregon. In 2023, he won the U.S. Open.

This is his first Olympics.

Shooting

Keith Sanderson, of Monument, spent eight years in the Marine Corps and eight years in the U.S. Army. He competed in rapid fire pistol at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics.

Track and field

Yared Nuguse is originally from Louisville, Kentucky, and currently lives in Boulder. In 2019, he was the NCAA D1 champion in the 1,500m. He came in second at the Olympic trials, the first time he had lost to an American since 2022. Fun fact: Nuguse can solve a Rubik’s cube in 33 seconds.

Valerie Constein, of Edwards, is making a comeback in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after having ACL surgery a year ago. She started running again in September, then really training in December. She attended the University of Colorado Boulder and currently lives in Boulder. She can play the piano and French horn and was in her high school’s pep band.

Volleyball

The U.S. women’s volleyball team plays their third game in pool play against France on Sunday after losing to China and beating Serbia. Two players with Colorado ties are on the roster: Haleigh Washington and Jordyn Poulter.

Washington, of Colorado Springs, led Doherty High School to the state title in 2012 and Penn State to the NCAA Division I title in 2014. She started her professional career in Italy in 2018 and is now on the U.S. Women’s National Team. This is her second Olympics. She was named the best middle blocker in Tokyo.

Poulter went to Eaglecrest High School in Aurora. She has competed in every major tournament for the U.S. This is her second Olympics, and she was named best setter at the Tokyo Olympics. In her free time, she is an aspiring filmmaker and plays the piano and guitar.
