Paris' bridges play a big part in the Summer Olympics

PARIS, France — During the 2024 Summer Olympics, tourists will use the famous bridges of Paris to travel between venues.

A few bridges played a big part in the opening ceremony.

All of the most famous bridges are along the Seine River and in the heart of Paris — each one is unique and helps connect the city's different neighborhoods. During the Olympics, they're front and center as some of the most interesting sights to see, with some still in use after hundreds of years.

Tour guide Annie Cherouvrier said there are 37 bridges in Paris. Each one is unique and plays a big part in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

From Pont Alexandre the Third, which is considered the most beautiful bridge in Paris to Pont Grenelle, where you can see a smaller version of the Statue of Liberty. Then there's the New Bridge, which is actually the oldest bridge in Paris.

"The New Bridge in Paris is actually the oldest one and that is not logical," Cherouvrier said.

Pont Neuf, as it's known in French, was the first stone bridge ever built over the Seine in 1607.

"It was the first stone bridge in Paris — that is why it is called the new bridge," said Cherouvrier.

Back then, there were houses on the bridge, but today, it's mostly tourists looking at the oldest bridge in Paris, while the bridge looks right back.

"It is decorated with masks — maybe you see them behind me. Each one is different," she said. "There are 383 masks, and we can say almost 800 eyes are watching us here."

Cherouvrier said she will be on these bridges with a front-row seat at the Olympics.
