Stars take control with win over Avalanche in Game 4

Dallas is one win away from knocking Colorado out of the NHL playoffs.

DENVER — Time to hit the panic button for the Avalanche.

Colorado's season is on life support after losing three consecutive games to the Dallas Stars, most recently a 5-1 defeat at Ball Arena on Monday night. After dropping Game 1 in overtime, the Stars are now just one victory away from knocking the Avs out of the NHL postseason with a 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven second-round playoff series.

The Stars opened their scoring when Wyatt Johnston found the back of the net on a short-handed goal near the end of the first period.

Dallas piled onto its lead, going up 3-0 with another from Johnston and one via Miro Heiskanen before Colorado finally responded with a goal by Casey Mittelstadt in the second period. Evgenii Dadonov padded the lead with a third-period goal. Sam Steel put the nail in the coffin with an empty-net goal with less than two minutes to play.

The Avalanche must go on the road and win out, next up in a Game 5 elimination matchup at American Airlines Center in Dallas at 6 p.m. (MT) on Wednesday.
