DENVER — Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon was named the National Hockey League's first star for the month of January.
MacKinnon led the league with 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points last month. This is the second straight month that MacKinnon earned the league's first star award.
January was very good to the Avalanche center. He registered a point in each game, extending his point streak to 13 games. MacKinnon ended the month with three straight multi-point games, including a five-point game on Jan. 24 against the Washington Capitals.
MacKinnon ranks second in the league with 84 points (31 goals and 53 assists) in 49 games this season. Only Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov has scored more points than MacKinnon this season.
Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner and Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson earned the league's second and third stars of the month, respectively.
