VANCOUVER, BC — The Colorado Avalanche extended their winning streak with an unusual overtime goal against the Vancouver Canucks.
Down 3-0 in the second period, Mikko Rantanen opened Colorado's scoring with three seconds remaining in the period to extend his point streak to 11 games.
In the third period, Nathan MacKinnon recorded his 42nd goal on the season and Ross Colton tied the game with his 14th goal this season.
In overtime, Colorado started on a power play and Valeri Nichushkin would tip in a Nathan MacKinnon shot off his visor to give Colorado the win and two points in the standings.
As of Thursday morning, Colorado has claimed the top spot in the Central Division, but remains in a close three-team race with the Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets.
This is the Avs' fifth straight win. Their last loss was in Nashville when the Predators rolled over the Avalanche 5-1 on March 2. Since then, Colorado has allowed just eight goals in five games.
Colorado's next game will be against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, March 16, at 8 p.m. MDT.
