On this day in sports: Colorado Rockies play last NHL game

The Colorado Rockies NHL team played their last game on April 3, 1982.

DENVER — The Mile High City had an NHL team to root for before the Quebec Nordiques came to town to become the Colorado Avalanche.

The Colorado Rockies played professional hockey in Denver from 1976 to 1982 before the baseball team with the same name was created.

On this day, April 3, 1982, the Colorado Rockies NHL team played their final game -- a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames. Colorado advanced to the postseason just once in six seasons in Denver.

The Rockies were sold to John McMullen, who moved the team to New Jersey to become the Devils, which have since won three Stanley Cups (1995, 2000, 2003).
