ENGLEWOOD, Colo — Pat Surtain II is finishing up just his third season and already he has two consecutive Pro Bowl berths. And now, for the second consecutive time, the cornerback has been named the Demaryius Thomas Most Valuable Player for the 2023 season in a vote by the local media.
“First off, I mean it’s a huge honor to receive such a prestigious award after Demaryius who showed nothing less than humility,'' Surtain said. "He was not just a great athlete but a great person off the field and to be recognized with such a huge honor means a lot. I’m very humbled to receive this so thank you all.”
Thomas was one of the Broncos' best-ever receivers during his 8 1/2 seasons rom 2010-18 who died unexpectedly from seizure complications at his Georgia home on Dec. 9, 2021.
While this reporter voted for quarterback Russell Wilson, Surtain's impact on the Denver defense doesn't show up on the stat sheet -- he had just one interception this year and only two last year -- but he is the type of cornerback who well covers the opponents' top receiver.
