Sources: MLB officials visited Denver this week as part of Rockies' 2022 All-Star Game bid

The city of Denver and the Colorado Rockies are hoping to return the Midsummer Classic to Colorado for the first time since 1998.

DENVER — Major League Baseball officials were in Denver Monday taking a tour as part of the city’s and Colorado Rockies’ bid to host the All-Star Game in 2022, sources told 9NEWS.

It wasn’t the MLB’s first site visit to Denver in regards to its 2022 All-Star bid, but it may have been its most thorough.

The city of Denver and the Rockies have the Convention Center and Civic Center Park in its plans to host various fan events. McGregor’s Square, which is just outside Coors Field, may also be incorporated into the three-day event in July.

The All-Star Game would be played at Coors Field, as it was in 1998 when the American League defeated the National League, 13-8, in what was a typical score in the ballpark’s pre-humidor era.

The MLB All-Star Game will be hosted by Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium in July and Atlanta’s SunTrust Park in 2021. MLB has also awarded the MLB All-Star Game in 2026 to Philadelphia as part of our nation’s 250-year celebration.

The Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs are considered chief competitors to the Denver and Rockies’ bid for the 2022 All-Star Game, along with Boston, Houston and Toronto. MLB is expected to award its 2022 All-Star Game later this summer.
