Payton won't confirm what looks like an adjustment to QB rotation

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The eyes show a clear adjustment to the Broncos' quarterback rotation.

There would be no words of confirmation from Sean Payton, however.

It appears the Broncos' QB competition has been narrowed to Jarrett Stidham and Bo Nix. This after Zach Wilson stayed with the No. 3 offense for a second consecutive day.

"No, look, we've got a plan and ... no news to announce there,'' Payton said. "I know you're looking for it, but ... "

Perhaps, Payton is being respectful of Wilson, who was the NFL's No. 2 overall draft pick in 2021 but had three disappointing years with the New York Jets before he was dealt to the Broncos on April 22. Three days later, the Broncos used their No. 12 overall draft pick to select Nix.

Payton indicated Saturday an adjustment to the QB reps could be coming this week.

During OTAs in late-May/early June, the QB rotation had the incumbent starter Stidham leading the No. 1 offense on Tuesdays, Wilson with the top group on Wednesdays and the first-round rookie Nix taking first-team reps on Thursday.

After the summer break, the rotation was amended slightly as training camp commenced last week with Nix moving ahead of Wilson. The quarterbacks with the No. 1 offense has gone this way:

Wednesday: Stidham

Thursday: Nix

Friday: Wilson

Saturday: Stidham

Sunday: Off

Monday: Nix

Tuesday: Stidham

Asked again if Wilson would still run with the No. 1 offense, Payton said: "We'll see. But like I said there's nothing to announce."
