ENGLEWOOD, Colo — When reviewing the college stat lines for Luke McCaffrey, the C was put to good and varied use.
C was for completions his 2019 freshman year at Nebraska. McCaffrey had 9 completions in 12 attempts with two going for touchdowns.
C was for carries his 2020 season at Nebraska. He had 65 carries for 364 yards (5.6 per carry) and three touchdowns.
C was for catches in his final two seasons at Rice. McCaffrey had 58 catches for 723 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2022, his first as a full-time receiver. He had a pops-like 71 catches for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns in 13 games in 2023.
After demonstrating his route running skills Thursday at Rice University’s Pro Day, Luke, the youngest of four McCaffrey boys, has top 30 visits scheduled with several NFL teams through the first two weeks in April, including a local stop at Denver Broncos headquarters in Dove Valley, where his father Ed hung out for nine seasons from 1995-2003.
In the next three to four weeks leading up to the NFL Draft that will be held April 25-27, the C for McCaffrey is for Colorado. He played at Valor Christian where his brother and San Francisco 49ers’ star running back Christian McCaffrey also went to school.
At the NFL Combine three weeks ago in Indianapolis, where his 4.47-second 40 time edged Christian’s 4.48 from back in 2017, Luke McCaffrey was asked by 9NEWS’ Scotty Gange about the possibility of getting drafted by the Broncos: “That’d be a dream come true. I grew up kind of in that locker room with my dad playing and then when he was broadcasting. It was awesome to grow up at Mile High. I got to play a couple games there in high school luckily enough in the seasons we did well so that would be a dream come true.”
The Broncos have also held local visits with Wyoming linebacker Easton Gibbs and tight end Treyton Welch, Colorado State outside linebacker Mohamed Kamara and cornerback Chigozie Anusiem, and Colorado outside linebacker Jordan Domineck sources tell 9NEWS. The Broncos also held a top 30 visit with TCU safety Millard Bradford, a source confirmed.
Welch is listed at 6-foot-3, 241 pounds. He had 22 catches for 308 yards and five touchdowns as a junior for the Cowboys in 2022.He had 31 catches again for 308 yards and two touchdowns last year as a senior.
Domineck was a six-year college player, playing four seasons at Georgia Tech, 2022 with Arkansas -- where he had 7.5 sacks as a teammate of the Broncos’ Drew Sanders -- and last season with the CU Buffs where he had 5.0 sacks and 12 tackles for loss.
