ENGLEWOOD, Colo — Two weeks after adding two significant players to their quarterback room, the Broncos released veteran Ben DiNucci on Wednesday, DiNucci announced on social media.
DiNucci was signed by the Broncos at this time last year as he won a pro tryout at the team's 2023 rookie minicamp. He played well in the preseason, completing 21 of 31 for 187 yards, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in three games for an impressive 105.2 passer rating.
That got him the No. 3 quarterback job behind Russell Wilson and Jarrett Stidham. But with Wilson and Stidham staying healthy all season, No. 3 meant DiNucci spent the entire season on the Broncos' practice squad. When New Orleans tried to sign him away early in the season, DiNucci decided to stay because he wanted to keep working in Sean Payton's offensive system.
As a reward for staying, the Broncos elevated DiNucci for three games last year for increased pay, but they never activated him on their game-day roster.
DiNucci's release comes two weeks after the Broncos acquired fourth-year quarterback and former No. 2 overall draft pick Zach Wilson from the New York Jets, then followed up by selecting Bo Nix with their No. 12 overall draft pick.
The Broncos are also giving Colorado School of Mines' record-setting quarterback John Matocha a tryout at their rookie minicamp this weekend.
The Broncos currently have 74 players on their 90-man roster, but that doesn't include their seven draft picks and 14 undrafted free-agent rookies, some of whom figure to sign in the coming days.
