Broncos activate receiver Johnson, elevate QB DiNucci, TE Krull

Brandon Johnson, who has 3 TD catches, has been out 4 weeks with a hamstring strain. Krull could help in receiving game.

HOUSTON — The Broncos made two roster moves that were expected Saturday in advance of their game here Sunday against the Houston Texans.

And there was another roster move that takes some explaining.

Second-year receiver Brandon Johnson was activated off injured reserve to the 53-man roster. Johnson had just 8 catches through the Broncos' first seven games but three were for touchdowns. He has been sidelined the past four games with a hamstring injury.

Tight end Lucas Krull was elevated from the practice squad for the second time in four weeks. Krull played 20 snaps in the Broncos' 22-20 win at Buffalo last month, but didn't have a catch. He is considered a receiver-type tight end.

The Broncos also elevated quarterback Ben DiNucci from the practice squad. However, DiNucci may not be activated for the game because the only way he could  be used as a No. 3 emergency quarterback is if he's promoted to the 53-man roster.

The Broncos' top two quarterbacks are Russell Wilson, who has taken every snap this season, and Jarrett Stidham. Both are healthy.

Unlike other positions, a quarterback cannot be elevated from the practice squad and play as a designated No. 3 QB -- he must come from the 53. With Johnson's activation, the Broncos have all 53 roster spots filled.

The 6-5 Broncos play the 6-5 Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on Sunday with kickoff at 11 a.m. (MST).
