Jaguars cornerback Kaleb Hayes (43) leaves the field after an NFL pre-season game against the Dolphins, Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, in Jacksonville, Fla.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos made a roster move Monday, the day after their preseason victory at Indianapolis.

The team was awarded former New York Giants defensive back Kaleb Hayes off waivers and made roster room by cutting former Air Force linebacker Alec Mock.

Hayes played his college ball at Oregon State and BYU. He is a superb athlete, playing receiver, quarterback and running back in high school, and reportedly has been timed in the 40 at 4.33 seconds.

Hayes signed with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent last year. The Broncos no doubt want to look at him as a special teams gunner after they were involved in a preseason game in which there were 13 combined kickoff returns in the 34-30 affair with the Colts.

Mock has been on and off the Broncos' roster the past four months. He was signed as an undrafted rookie in late April, participated in the Broncos' OTAs and minicamps in the spring, then was waived in June. He re-signed with the team last week and played 12 defensive snaps against the Colts.

Injury updates

Tight end Lucas Krull (right toe) and cornerback Art Green (concussion) took MRI exams Monday morning. There is hope Krull will be no worse than day-to-day. It's possible Green will be in the concussion protocol this week.

X-rays came back negative on the right ribs of starting left guard Ben Powers. He received a friendly fire blast from running back Samaje Perine during an interception return. Powers' ribs are plenty sore, but he stayed in for Bo Nix's 11-play drive.
