DENVER — The Denver Broncos have notified quarterback Russell Wilson he will be released when the new NFL season officially opens next Wednesday, potentially bringing an end to a bad two-year stretch of football in Denver.
The Broncos will pay Wilson $39 million in 2024 to play for another team. Overall, the Broncos will have paid Wilson $124 million for 11 wins.
One Broncos legend, former linebacker Karl Mecklenburg, made his feelings known about Wilson on Tuesday on social media.
"Russell Wilson isn’t a leader," Mecklenburg wrote on X. "The foolishness that went on in his first year at Denver with a private coach, his own office at the facility, and family at training camp when other players didn’t have those privileges, proved his self centeredness."
The Broncos acquiesced to Wilson's request for his own office, as well as personal coaching and training staff at team headquarters during his first season in Denver in 2022.
Mecklenburg is considered one of the greatest Broncos of all time, playing his entire career in orange and blue from 1983 to 1994, with six Pro Bowl appearances. Mecklenburg is a member of the Broncos Ring of Fame at Empower Field at Mile High.
Wilson's departure has also led to other cryptic posts on social media.
"Another one," Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton posted.
Sutton also removed all Broncos mentions from this X profile.
