ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Derrick Brooks, a Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker, apparently understands how difficult it is to tackle a player correctly during a high rate of NFL game-action speed.
Brooks, an appeals hearing officer for both the NFL and the NFL players union, reduced the unpaid suspension of Broncos' safety Kareem Jackson from four games to two Tuesday. Jackson on Monday had been levied the four-game suspension, which would have cost him $558,833 of game checks, by NFL disciplinarian Jon Runyan.
Brooks' reduction means Jackson will now lose two game checks worth $279,416.50. Jackson will now miss the Broncos' next two games -- Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs at home, and Monday, Nov. 13 at Buffalo -- but will be able to play in the home games Nov. 19 against the Minnesota Vikings and Nov. 26 against the Cleveland Browns.
Jackson has received discipline for five unnecessary roughness blows in 7 games this season, including two game ejections. The latest was against Green Bay tight end Luke Musgrave on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High. The first four such infractions netted fines of $89,670, although a portion of that total was reduced through previous appeals.
Jackson, 35, is in his 14th NFL season, fifth with the Broncos.
