ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — While there hasn't been much NFL tape on quarterback Jarrett Stidham, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton must have seen enough to like.
A source confirmed the Broncos reached a two-year agreement Monday with Stidham to become the backup quarterback to Russell Wilson.
The Broncos' previous football operations regime of John Elway, Matt Russell and Vic Fangio liked Stidham enough to hold a formal interview with the Auburn quarterback at the 2019 NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Stidham wound up a fourth-round draft pick of the New England Patriots a couple months later and spent his rookie season as one of Tom Brady's backups.
Stidham, who will turn 27 during training camp, only saw mop-up playing time his first two seasons in New England then missed most of his third season because of back surgery. He was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders last year when he was reunited with Josh McDaniels, who was the Patriots' offensive coordinator turned Raiders' head coach.
Stidham started the final two games of last season in place of the benched Derek Carr and while the Raiders lost both games, Stidham threw for 365 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 37-34 loss to San Francisco, which reached the NFC Championship Game and had the league's No. 1 defense. Stidham also completed 22 of 36 for 219 yards and a touchdown in a 31-13 drubbing from Kansas City, the eventual Super Bowl champions.
