Broncos signing former Dolphins safety to 3-year deal

Brandon Jones was a part-time starting free safety the past four years for the Miami Dolphins. He replaces Justin Simmons in the Broncos' lineup.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Justin Simmons is gone. Justin Simmons has been replaced.

So it goes in the NFL wher even the best players eventually become replaceable.

The Denver Broncos reached agreement with cover safety Brandon Jones on a three-year, $20 million contract Monday, sources confirmed to 9NEWS.

Jones stated on X: "Truly wouldn’t trade these last 4 years for anything. Forever grateful for the Dolphins organization for taking a chance on a kid from Nacogdoches, Texas that wanted nothing more than to live out his childhood dreams of playing in the NFL. Denver… LFG"

Jones, who turns 26 in three weeks, played his first four seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He was drafted out of Texas in 2020 in the third round. Fellow Broncos' starting safety P.J. Locke was undrafted out of Texas in 2019. Backup Broncos safety Caden Sterns was a fifth-round pick of the Broncos out of Texas in 2021.

Stay back, don't bite, Longhorns.

Jones was a part-time starter for the Dolphins -- 30 of his 54 games played. He can also play nickel in a pinch. He is also considered a strong tackler -- he had three in the 70-20 drubbing of the Broncos last September.

The Broncos will now seek a nose tackle, inside linebacker and quarterback, and possibly a tight end and receiver in free agency.
