Broncos notes: Fangio says Fant needs 'to learn how to be a tight end in NFL'

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — It takes more than a couple receptions in an NFL offseason practice to impress Broncos head coach Vic Fangio.

First-round pick Noah Fant, a tight end with speed, caught two nice sideline patterns in the 12- to 15-yard range during the Broncos’ OTA practice Monday inside the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse.

He caught one from backup quarterback Kevin Hogan and the other from rookie Drew Lock.

So, coach, what’d ya think?

“Yeah, he can run,’’ Fangio said. “We all knew that. That was easy, but now he has to learn how to be a tight end in the NFL. He’s got tools, but you know, I can go into Home Depot and walk out with a bunch of nice tools and I’m not a carpenter. We have to teach him how to be a tight end in the NFL, and he’s working great at it.”

Von tops jersey sales

Even with the new addition that is Flacco and phenom popularity of local kid Phillip Lindsay, Von Miller is still the favorite among Broncos fans.

Jersey sales from the past 60 days at Broncos Team Stores:

1. Von Miller

2. Phillip Lindsay

3. Bradley Chubb

4. Joe Flacco

5. Derek Wolfe

Miller and Lindsay are 1-2 by a wide margin with Chubb a distant third.

Barclay at guard

Don Barclay has been around, although not last year.

The Green Bay Packers’ starting right tackle in 2013, Barclay is lining up at right guard with Joe Flacco’s first-team offense during the Broncos’ OTAs.

Barclay, 30, had been at left guard until the Broncos’ drafted Dalton Risner in the second round. Ron Leary is expected to become the starting right guard once he’s fully cleared from Achilles surgery.

But Barclay appears to have the type of flexibility and experience coveted by Broncos offensive line coach Mike Munchak.

“He’s in the mix there in the O-Line,’’ Fangio said of Barclay. “He’s a veteran player who has played a lot of places, played a lot of football. He’s in there competing with everybody.”

Barclay was coming off a season-ending concussion injury with the Detroit Lions in 2017 when he signed with the New Orleans Saints during training camp last year. He didn’t make their season-opening 53-man roster and though he had workouts with several teams, he was never signed last year.

He signed a futures contract with the Broncos in January.

Leary, tight end Jake Butt and cornerback Isaac Yiadom all returned for individual drills Monday but were held out of 11-on-11 team drills.

Fangio hosted more than 100 local high school football coaches at the Broncos’ OTA Monday.
