Last month, 9NEWS spoke with McKernan about how he wanted people to remember him.

"I want them to think he was a good husband, a good father, a good family man and the ultimate Broncos fan," he said.McKernan worked as a mechanic for United Airlines and he and his wife lived in Gunnison, but traveled a great deal. He sold the barrel he wore for Super Bowl XXXII for $30,000. It was autographed by 49 players and was sold to a Black Hawk casino. McKernan gave part of the proceeds to a battered women's shelter.

The NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio also has some of McKernan's barrels in their collection, but none are currently on display.

In the late 1990s, McKernan was in the inaugural display of the VISA Hall of Fame for Fans.
