ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The sizable contracts of three players acquired nearly offset the decent-to-smaller deals of six players lost.

Still, the Broncos were awarded three extra compensatory draft picks Tuesday, even if they came in a round lower than hoped.

The Broncos will get an extra pick at the end of the fifth round and two extra selections near the end of the 7th round.

The Broncos 11 picks in the 2020 draft:

Round. Overall pick

1. 15

2. 46

3. 77

3. 83 (from Steelers)

3. 95 (from 49ers)

4. 118

5. 178 (compensatory)

6. 182 (from Washington)

7. 238 (from Patriots)

7. 252 (compensatory)

7. 254 (compensatory)

The key to this draft setup is Broncos general manager John Elway and top assistant Matt Russell have five selections within the top 95 picks to improve a team that has missed the playoffs four consecutive seasons.

Compensatory picks are awarded on a formula based on contracts of players a team loses to free agency against contracts of free agent players a team adds.

The Broncos lost six players to free agency: Matt Paradis ($11.5 million in 2019), Billy Turner ($11 million in ‘19), Bradley Roby (one year, $10 million), Shaq Barrett (one year, $5 million), Max Garcia (one year, $1.7 million) and Tramaine Brock (one year, $1.35 million). 2019 total: $40.55 million in 2019.

The Broncos signed three players from free agency last year: Ja’Wuan James ($17 million in 2019), Kareem Jackson ($12 million in ‘19) and Bryce Callahan ($6.5 million in ‘19). 2019 total: $35.5 million.
