ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The AFC Defensive Player of the Week plays for the Denver Broncos.
Broncos safety Justin Simmons was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.
This is the first time Simmons has received the honor in his eight-year NFL career.
Simmons joins Kareem Jackson (2019), T.J. Ward (2015), John Lynch (2005), Steve Atwater (1991) and Steve Foley (1984) as the only safeties in Broncos history to receive the honor.
In Sunday's 24-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, Simmons recorded two solo tackles, one interception, one pass defense, and one fumble recovery.
Simmons' interception of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the 29th of his career, which is tied for the most by any NFL player since the start of the 2016 season.
Thirty-one Broncos players have received AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors since its inception in 1984.
