BOULDER, Colo. — The University of Colorado athletic director is addressing rumors about a possible head coaching change within CU's football program.
“We do not comment on speculation or unsubstantiated rumors with anonymous sources," said CU Athletic Director Rick George in a statement. "I have made no decisions regarding the future of the football program."
Head coach Mike MacIntyre's record is 30-43 since being hired at CU on Dec. 10, 2012.
“As I’ve stated in the past, we continually evaluate all aspects of all of our 17 intercollegiate sport programs,” George added.
MacIntyre held his weekly press conference on Tuesday ahead of the team's final home game of the season against Utah. When asked about his job security and the rumors that had been circling the past 12 hours, he didn't hold back.
"For an anonymous story to come out with no quoted source, it's kind of gutless, the way I see it," he told reporters. "But that's the world we live in, too, and I understand that."
MacIntyre said he last spoke with George about the direction of the program two weeks ago, and had George's full support. He went on to say that he didn't think his job was in jeopardy, but knew success in college football is measured by wins and losses.
"We just got to find a way to win a football game. We've come close," MacIntyre said. "You win a football game [and] a lot of the noise goes away."
Colorado began the 2018 season with five wins, but is now in the midst of a five-game losing streak. The team needs one more win to become bowl eligible.
The Buffaloes play their final home game Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Folsom Field against Utah and conclude the season Saturday, Nov. 24 at California. This Saturday will be senior day for the graduating members of the team. The players told reporters they're trying to ignore the current distractions so they can find a way to support those seniors.
"These are all still rumors and allegations, and we're just playing these two games because we want to send these seniors out right, and send them out on a high note," quarterback Steven Montez said.
"I think everyone knows, one more win and we're bowl eligible, so it's kind of a win-win for us," senior defensive back Nick Fisher added.
MacIntyre signed a 3-year contract extension in January 2017 following a 10-4 season in which he was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. MacIntyre's contract runs through the 2021 season.
