Mines football prepares for Division II semifinals

The Orediggers will play their final game at Marv Kay Stadium on Saturday with a trip to the Division II national championship on the line.

GOLDEN, Colo. — Being one of four football teams left in the country is an impressive feat — but the Colorado School of Mines football team expected to be here.

The Orediggers played for a Division II national championship last season and have every intention of doing so again in 2023.

Mines is now just one win away from making it back. The Orediggers will play their final game at Marv Kay Stadium on Saturday (December 9) when they host Kutztown at 1:30 p.m.

The winner will advance to the national title game in McKinney, Texas, on December 16.

"It's not lost on us. We planned on being here, though," head coach Pete Sterbick said after Tuesday night's practice. "This is the stage we expected to be in, and we expect to get it done."

The Orediggers are led by redshirt senior quarterback John Matocha.

"I know that I'm extremely blessed to be in this position and have this opportunity to keep playing football in December," Matocha said. "Not a lot of guys get to do that."
