DENVER — The NCAA Tournament: Where memories are made.
But for Arizona State men's basketball head coach Bobby Hurley, he remembers nothing but awful times in downtown Denver.
Hurley was a freshman on the Duke team that advanced to the 1990 national championship game played at McNichols Arena, where the Blue Devils were run out of the gym by UNLV in a 103-73 defeat.
"That was a dark day," Hurley said at Ball Arena, the regional site of the first- and second-round games where the Sun Devils are playing. "I had won so much up to that point -- in high school and I got to the championship game as a freshman. This is what I'm supposed to do, right? I got punched in the mouth that night."
Things worked pretty good for Hurley, who won two national titles after that night.
No. 11 ASU plays No. 6 TCU at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Ball Arena.
