DENVER — DU fifth year guard Tommy Bruner gets buckets — more buckets than anyone in the country.
He’s college basketball’s scoring leader in points per game (25.3).
"It was exciting to see my name up there," Bruner said. "When you play other teams they talk trash saying 'You’re not No. 1! You’re not this and that!' Just seeing my name up there is exciting.”
Pioneers head coach Jeff Wulbrun has been very impressed by his star guard.
"I knew that he was geared and primed to have a great season," Wulbrun said. "He has confidence in his game. He’s doing something no one else in the country is."
Over a recent two game stretch, 72% of his points have been scored in the second half, meaning he steps up in bigger moments. People are calling it 'Tommy Time.'
"Yeah, I’ve been seeing that a little bit on social media," he said.
But what does 'Tommy Time' actually mean?
"I guess I just start putting the ball in the hole," he said with a laugh.
Bruner is just as locked in off the court. He started a non-profit called the Be Different Foundation.
Over the holidays, he helped needy families by giving nearly 1,000 toys to 100 Colorado kids.
"It’s a big thing for me," he said. "Just to see the smile on the kids faces and not only the kids, but the parents too. Just to be around them, touch them, love on them, get to know the community, get to know the next generation, that’s why I do it."
Bruner has a chance to become Colorado’s first-ever Division I player to lead the nation in scoring.
"I think Colorado is a close state where people get along and they support their teams," he said. "So it would give everyone in the state something to brag about. It would be big time."
