CU superfan sidelined for rivalry game in Lincoln due to broken hip, but she hasn't lost her dedication

Twins Peggy and Betty Coppom were dedicated to their beloved Buffs. Now, Peggy cheers solo after losing her sister.

BOULDER, Colo. — The truly dedicated University of Colorado Buffs fans will make the trip from Boulder to Lincoln, where they will find themselves in a sea of red.

For many years, two tiny twin sisters bravely walked into Memorial Stadium to cheer on their team. Peggy and Betty Coppom never failed to show up for their team, even when the team was terrible.

For CU fans the coach, the QB and the record matter, but a win against the Nebraska Cornhuskers is a priority.

Betty passed away a few years ago. Now, Peggy cheers for both of them.

However, Peggy didn't travel to Nebraska this year for the big showdown with the Cornhuskers. She’s still on IR (injured reserve) after breaking a hip.

Peggy said it was a silly thing — she was taking out her trash and took a tumble.

"I just went, I don't know, I think the devil was pushing me," Peggy said.

“I could not believe I’d fallen," Peggy said. "I’m so aware of falling at my age, I even have a prayer card in there, 'God help me not to fall.'”

No matter the forces at work, the net result sent her to the hospital and then rehab. After all of that, Peggy plans to be at every home game, even if she needs to use a wheelchair.

“I don’t want people to have to be helping me all the time, but sometimes you have to be humble and know you need help and accept it," she said.

Peggy is very grateful for everyone in her life as she approaches a century of living.

"The kids are planning this party for me," Peggy said. "Trying not to disappoint them, but God's in charge if he wants me to live that long."

Through it all, Peggy's faith remains strong.

"I just want them to know I'm still smiling, and laughing and praying... I guess praying and playing," Peggy said. "And keep the faith, and keep going on no matter what kind of burden you have."
