Jenny Cavnar is ready to make MLB history

An Aurora native who began a media career as a 9NEWS intern, Jenny Canvar is making history in Major League Baseball.

DENVER — Jenny Cavnar is leaving the Colorado Rockies television broadcasts to become the play-by-play announcer for the Oakland Athletics.

Cavnar becomes the first female primary play-by-play voice in Major League Baseball history, it was announced Tuesday. Cavnar will call the majority of the club's games starting with the 2024 season.

A 20-year media veteran who began her career as an intern at 9NEWS, Cavnar has served as a backup play-by-play announcer, pregame and postgame host, and reporter for the Rockies' television broadcasts for 12 years.

Cavnar  is a graduate of Smoky Hill High School in Aurora and Colorado State University in Fort Collins where she was a member of the lacrosse team.

In 2018, Cavnar became one of the only women to ever announce play-by-play for an MLB broadcast.

“It is a dream come true to join the broadcast team for the Oakland A’s and their rich baseball history,” Cavnar said.

“Growing up the daughter of a baseball coach, I have loved the game from a young age, along with the stories, history and relationships the game provides. I’m excited to start my 18th season as a major league broadcaster with my good friend, Dallas Braden, and share our experiences with the loyal fans of the Athletics as we go on this ride together.”

"Thank you Jenny Cavnar for 12 great seasons with the Rockies," the club said Tuesday.

“Jenny is a very talented announcer with significant experience covering baseball,” said Matt Murphy, President and General Manager of NBC Sports California and NBC Sports Bay Area. “She’s been a groundbreaking professional who’s earned the admiration of fans and her peers throughout her career. We’re very excited for her to join our excellent team and lead our A’s coverage starting this season.”
