ADAMS COUNTY - Todd Helton, first baseman for the Colorado Rockies, was sentenced Tuesday morning for his driving while ability is impaired charged.
Helton was arrested for alleged drunk driving in February. He was sentenced to one year of probation, 24 hours of community service and will have to pay a $400 fine for the charge. The court also instructed for him to go through alcohol evaluation and treatment if recommended. The DUI charge he was facing was dropped when he pleaded to the driving while ability is impaired.
He apologized to the court Tuesday morning for his actions.
A police report says Helton told an officer he had red wine hours before he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
He was arrested early on Feb. 6 at a gas station in the Denver suburb of Thornton, where he lives.
According to a police incident report, officers arrested Helton after a witness reported seeing Helton's truck swerve into a median before pulling into the gas station. Helton's blood-alcohol level hasn't been released, but police say it was above the legal driving limit. Officers say Helton volunteered that he had two cups of wine Tuesday night.
Helton has apologized for his actions in a statement released by the Rockies.
