Local racing team with podium finish in SPEED World Challenge race

ELKHART LAKE – Denver-based K-PAX/3R Racing Team's Randy Pobst finished third in his Porsche GT3 in the Aug. 10 race.

K-PAX/3-R Teammate Michael Galati finished 15th in the field of 26 cars.

The last time Pobst and Galati competed as a team here at Road America was in 2004 when Galati and his Champion Audi RS6 held off the pole sitting Audi of Pobst to win his third World Challenge race here in Wisconsin. Pobst was a close second. Galati scored another GT win for Audi at Road America in 2002 on his way to winning the GT championship.

Pobst, whose only World Challenge win here at Road America came over a decade ago, had hoped to accomplish some of that Galati magic on Aug. 9 to help maintain his slim 13-point lead over Andy Pilgrim.

"Despite recent adjustments and the added (required) weight, my Porsche is a great handling car," said Pobst. "We are up against very tough competition here in SPEED GT and considering that our competition has 50 to 100 percent bigger engines and their cars weigh about the same as our Porsches, which are amazingly fast, which is a credit to both Porsche and the K-PAX/3R Racing crew."

"I think if we can finish in the top five that will be good for us on this track given where our competition is right now," said Pobst. "But, I am extremely happy to have Porsche on top of the heap for the Manufacturers' Championship and happy to be in the lead for the Drivers' Championship and we plan on doing everything we can to hang on to that."

"I have won a lot of races here at Road America and I simply love this place, it is one of the best race tracks anywhere, but it is hard to say that we have a chance of winning, because we are at a little bit of a disadvantage here," said Galati with his usual casual smile.

"Our K-PAX/3R racing guys have given us great handling Porsches, but those long straights are tough for us against those big V-8s and the advantage the Porsche used to have under braking is gone because our cars weigh about the same and they have ABS and they have larger tires", said Galati. "But we will give it everything we have and see how things work out on Sunday. It ought to be interesting."

"Road America is a great and classic natural terrain circuit and I love racing here because this track has some really great and challenging turns," agreed Pobst. "How can you not love racing a Porsche on a great track like Road America?"

But things didn't work out as Pobst or Galati had planned – although Pobst had a very respectable finish, Galati got into trouble toward the end of the race.

The winner was Tommy Archer, driving a Dodge viper.

Eric Curran finished second in his Cadillac CTS-V and Pobst finished third.

The race finished under caution, after Andy Pilgrim's Cadillac blew the engine and spilled oil all over the track. Several cars spun as a result, including Galati's Porsche, which was in sixth place at the time.

Pobst remains in first place in the points race in the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Drivers' Championship. This race was the sixth of 10 rounds.

Pobst currently has 595 points. Pilgrim has 527 and Brandon Davis, who drives a Ford Mustang Cobra is in third with 484. Galati retains fourth place with 449.

The K-PAX/3R Racing Team has Porsche on top of the Manufacturers' Championship Presented by Racer Magazine with 31 points. Cadillac is second with 29 and Ford is third with 28.

The race can be seen on SPEED, Thursday, August 20, at 10.
