Windsor is home to the top runners in the state

The Windsor Wizards head into state championship week with two of the fastest runners in the state.

WINDSOR, Colo. — The state championship track and field meet is this weekend and ahead of the big meet, the Windsor Wizards have the best weapon in the state.

Just weeks after clocking the state’s fastest 100-meter dash at 10:53, senior Mikey Munn would run 10:52 at Roosevelt, making him the fastest boy in Colorado.

“It's all great, I felt really confident," Munn said. "I ran that 10:53 at Pomona and I was like, Oh, that might be tough to get back to and I ran it again, it gave me a lot of confidence. And I'm just excited for the state meet and hopefully get back to those low marks like that.”

Munn is primarily a football player. A defensive back who led Colorado in interceptions with 12 last season, he says the technique followed him over to track.

“One of the things that not a lot people think about, especially the DB position is your hips," Munn explained. "It's a weird thing, but you gotta have really fluid hips and loose hips, and doing all the DB training and all the DB practice stuff, helps you be really explosive out the blocks."

Munn is only in his first full track season — some may call it magic.

“He's not used to track really, because he just came out of nowhere," sophomore sprinter Kiana Cumings said. "So it's just fun to be able to be like, hey, well, I know this and I'm younger than you and stuff like that.”

Cumings is ranked first in the 4A 100-meter dash and has broken records in the 200, 400, and close to the 100-meter dash record.

The state’s fastest boy and girl are both at the same school, but what better place for sorcery than at Windsor High School.

Munn ranks nationally in the 200-meter dash. And he thinks Colorado is seriously underrated.

"We won't have consistently the greatest athletes but there's always kids going Power Five running these great marks. I mean, we may not be as consistent as Texas, but you know we have some pretty good athletes here."

Munn would go on to win gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m.
