Tradition never graduates: Coil legacy lives on at Green Mountain

The Green Mountain girls basketball team is home to two sisters who are both starters, but what's more impressive is their family legacy.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Name a stronger bond than sisters who are also teammates.

Clara and Peyton Coil are sisters, two years apart and both on the Green Mountain varsity basketball team.

"It's fun," Peyton said. "I mean, you get the occasional time where we like to butt heads and kind of yell at each other, but you get over it eventually."

Rams head coach Matteo Busnardo is in his second year leading the program, first coaching both sisters.

"I talk to them a lot about it," Busnardo said. "I mean, I've told them I'm like, You guys are very lucky to be playing together, especially on varsity. And basketball too. I mean, there's only five players on the floor, so for them to both be starters."

Sibling teammates are not new, but how many have a play named after them?

"When he says 'Coil the Coil' it's when one of us has the ball and the other one of us is open," Clara said. "So just just look for the other one close to the basket."

The last time Green Mountain boys won a state championship was back when their dad, Kerry Coil played.

"1992 was a special group of guys," Kerry Coil said. "We all played our tail off, we competed for each other and were best friends on and off the court."

Basketball seems to run in the family, stemming from their great grandma, Dorothy Anderson, named to the Iowa Hall of Fame.

"All of our aunts and uncles played basketball on both sides of our family so we're just it's just kind of a basketball family," Clara said.

Teammates, but also best friends who have just one more season together before Clara heads to college.

"It's kind of sad," Clara expressed. "I try not to think about it because it's sad. I'll be leaving next year for college and Peyton's like my best friend. So leaving her is gonna be tough."

But as of right now, they're enjoying every moment.
