Renowned strength coach joins Holy Family staff

Two-time NCAA Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year Shannon Turley is the newest coach on board the Holy Family Tigers team.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. — Months after winning the 3A state football championship, the Holy Family football program has added a successful college coach to their strength and conditioning roster.

“Most of my career has been at the collegiate level," coach Shannon Turley said. "I dabbled in the professional side, whether it be individually, working for the Kansas City Royals, but now I'm rewinding all the way back to my own athletic career that ended in high school.”

Coach Shannon Turley is the new strength coach at Holy Family, who may just have the most impressive resume in the building.

“When I got to Stanford, I had a clear vision," Turley explained. "I had a plan, a process, a system, if you will, that I felt like we could really develop durable, physically dominant football players that were going to be relentless competitors.”

Under head coach Jim Harbaugh and now Bronco David Shaw, Turley led the Stanford strength and conditioning program. Under his leadership, 42 Cardinal players were drafted into the NFL, including 9 Pro Bowlers.

Years later, he got the gig at CU under head coach Karl Dorrell, but after a one-win season, he was let go.

"It didn't go the way any of us wanted," Turley expressed. "But winning is hard, and there's a price that's got to be paid. And you know, we came up on the short end in debt.”

Holy Family found itself in a surplus, that a two-time NCAA Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year came to work for their high school and brought his scientific method to muscle recovery.

“What I kept hearing from coaches was, I need to keep Susie healthy, we're a different volleyball team if this girl's on the floor all six rotations," Turley recalled. "And I said, I do it differently.”

His first course of action was rehabilitating Griffin Eastman’s ACL tear. Eight months later, he won a state championship in the 100-meter dash.

Turley did that as a consultant, but now on staff, his biggest assignment is the reigning 3A state champs.

“Coach Gabriel is a phenomenal football coach, and the staff here is amazing," Turley said. "You talk about people with a certified background, the proof has been on the field.”

It sure doesn’t hurt bringing an NCAA coach of the year on board.

“If you love football, you got to be thrilled about the opportunity to be a Tiger.”

Holy Family kicks off the season against Northridge on Thursday.
