KUSA -- The SkyView Academy cross country team took a trek to Lyons, Colo. for the 3A cross country region 3 meet that determines who will participate in the 2015 State Cross Country meet in Colorado Springs.
SkyView Academy is looking to defend their 2014 boys 1st place finish by Ben Butler and their 2014 girls 10th place finish by Cassie Unruh. In the boys race, Ben Butler took the lead from the sound of the gun and didn't look back followed by a handful of teammates. As a team, SkyView scored 36 points followed by Peak to Peak Charter School with 88 points.
In the girls race, rain falling, the SkyView girls ran hard against tough competition and secured 4th place in the race to advance to the state meet. Last year's 10th place state finisher, Cassie Unruh, took 5th, just shy of her personal record by four seconds.
"Both the boys and girls teams have trained hard all season to reach this point," said SkyView Academy's Cross Country Coach Craig Wagner. "This is a very close knit team who enjoys and supports each other, and we are looking forward to getting back to Colorado Springs next weekend and ending the season on a strong note."
