HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — This was playoff hockey at its best.
Regis Jesuit, the No. 4 seed in the Class 5A hockey playoff bracket, clashed with No. 5 Monarch late Tuesday night in a quarterfinal thriller at South Suburban Sports Complex.
The Raiders and Coyotes exchanged strikes, swapping leads multiple times until junior Nico Pineiro netted the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift Regis Jesuit to the 4-3 victory.
"It's amazing. The crowd was amazing," Pineiro said. "It's a great feeling. There's nothing like it. You can't describe it -- just amazing."
Regis Jesuit advances to face No. 1 Valor Christian in the semifinals. That game will be played at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs.
Monarch's season ends with an 11-7-2 overall record.
