ARVADA, Colo — High school flag football is gearing up for its inaugural season as a CHSAA sanctioned sport, and there are a lot of changes from the first two years as a pilot program.
"There's screen blocking, punting, one yard rush line."
Wa, wa, wa, woah… punting?
"And it just feels way more like official."
It's also being played on a much bigger field, so instead of 60 by 30 it's 80 by 40.
Which is why Ralston Valley hosted scrimmages, for the players and refs to get better accustomed to the new.. and official rules.
"It is very important to understand you know what what the changes are and what it looks like and what the feel of it is and you know what blocking looks like the whole bit."
Let's get back to blocking… and that one yard rush line.
"that's been a big difference even in practices trying to figure out you know who can block trying to teach them how to block trying to get them fast side to side that little difference makes makes a big difference for how much time your quarterback has how well your receivers need to run your routes their routes how how effectively they need to understand you know where to be and what to do and how much time their quarterback has."
And while, it'll take some getting used to, there's still so much excitement.
"A lot of us are still figuring out what our favorite positions are because of the rule changes and how different it is this year and it's really cool to see that. you yeah I mean we have eyes on us from last year so I can only hope we're gonna come back better than ever"
So… for the parents in the stands, understand that this is new for everybody.
So you yes, there's going to be an issue here or there, but we'll work through that and we'll make the adaptations just like the teams will, right? Everyone will adapt and really have a successful season.
